Harry's Hampshire

An interactive, wearable map of Hampshire

Harry’s Hampshire Interactive Map is a unique product created by Eastleigh Tec Hub members Blue Donut Studios and SplashMaps, commissioned by Road To Agincourt and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The beautiful map – which is printed on fabric so it can be worn as a scarf or bandana – uses the latest technology to highlight the role Hampshire played in the build up and aftermath of the Battle of Agincourt. Using augmented reality, the map is imbedded with tales from the past and information of the significant role the region played in King Henry V’s reign. Historical points transform into animations complete with tales from the past and key information of the role the region played in the lead up to the battle.

Mayor Of Eastleigh Presented With Virtual Reality Map At Hamble Festival

The 16th century collided with the 21st century for the Mayor of Eastleigh when she was presented with Road To Agincourt’s innovative augmented reality map at the Hamble Valley Festival of Food.

Harry’s Hampshire Interactive Map – which is printed on fabric so it can be worn as a scarf or bandana – uses the latest technology to highlight the role Hampshire played in the build up and aftermath of the Battle of Agincourt. Using augmented reality, the map is imbedded with tales from the past and information of the significant role the region played in King Henry V’s reign.

Madame Mayor Cllr Jane Welsh was handed the map by Eastleigh Borough’s Culture Unit – the team behind Road To Agincourt – and shown how the product comes to life by using the free downloadable Zappar app on a smartphone or tablet.

Imbedded animations, audio recordings-and films each documenting Henry V’s connection with places such as Hamble, Portchester and Southampton, all feature in the map.IMG_2530

Road To Agincourt is a two-year project exploring the role the region played during and after King Henry’s journey to the battle of Agincourt.  Now in its second year – From Tree To Sea – the project will look at the aftermath of the battle and how it shaped Hampshire’s history, with a particular emphasis on Henry’s “great ships”, the wrecks of which lay at the bottom of the River Hamble.

Commemorative Interactive Map To Be Launched At Hamble Festival

Road To Agincourt is excited to announce it will launch its newly-designed interactive and wearable map, Harry’s Hampshire, at next month’s Hamble Festival of Food.

Designers Marcus Pullen of Blue Donut Studios and David Overton of SplashMaps are the team behind the stunningHarry’s Hampshire, a new interactive, wearable map that allows technology to bring history to life.

Based at Eastleigh’s digital creation space Tec Hub, the two companies were brought together by the Road To Agincourt project, run by Eastleigh Borough Council’s Culture Unit, to create a unique product for the Battle of Agincourt commemorations that would explore the role Hampshire played in King Henry V’s journey to war.

Using the latest technology, a click of a button from a smartphone brings areas of the map to life before the user’s eyes. Historical points transform into animations complete with tales from the past and key information of the role the region played in the lead up to the battle.

The innovative digital map will receive its official launch at Hamble Festival of Food in Hamble Quay onSaturday 23 April.

David Overton, Managing Director of SplashMaps, said:

Originally we had the idea to create a map on fabric as this makes a great, desirable and long lasting memento for most events.

“The addition of technology to key the digital content to the map came out of our original proposal, but we later changed approach as Blue Donut Studios came on board with the needed professionalism around digital story telling.”

Harry’s Hampshire, the map itself, is based on the John Speed map of Hampshire, and is printed on an all-weather; durable
fabric developed by SplashMaps. The design of the map is the work of Blue Donut Studios, who used augmented reality technology which allows the user to interact with the map via a barcode tracker on their smartphones.

Founder of BlueDonut Studios Marcus Pullen is proud to see the map in its finished stage:

It looks great and it’s useful due to its wearability… What more could you ask for? I like that it gives some historical context to our home country and it’s a fun way to explore how Hampshire plays a part in the history of the lead up to the Battle of Agincourt.”

Hamble Festival Of Food will showcase some of the finest produce in the region. From savoury pies and Biltong to artisan pork pies and cheeses this is a tasty destination for all foodies. The event is being staged in Hamble Quay on Saturday, April 23 from 10am to 4pm.

Commission To Create Interactive Map

Road To Agincourt is excited to announce it has commissioned the design and creation of an interactive wearable map to commemorate the battle of Agincourt.

Production company Blue Donut Studios and award-winning mapping brand SplashMaps, who are both based at Eastleigh’s brilliant digital creation space, Tec Hub,  have been tasked by the project with creating an interactive map of Hampshire, which can be worn and provides users with historical context surrounding the battle of Agincourt.

The interactive map will include information  at points such as where Henry V discovered a plot to overthrow him (Portchester Castle), places he stayed during the build up to the invasion of France (Bishops Waltham, Titchfield, Winchester and Southampton) and the main harbour where he kept his flagship Grace Dieu (Hamble).

Using the latest technology, areas on the map will literally “come to life” with a click of a button from a smartphone. Historical points will transform into animations before the wearer’s eyes, and tales from another age will be revealed by characters from the past.

From Medieval ship building in Hamble to The Southampton Plot, the interactive map examines life and experiences at the time of Henry V and the legacy that remains in the region some 600 years later.

The map itself is based on the John Speed map of Hampshire, and is printed on an all-weather fabric developed by SplashMaps, which is durable and can be easily washed and worn.

Marcus Pullen, Founder of Blue Donut Studios, is responsible for the design of the map, as well as implementing the technology which will bring the augmented reality trail to life.

The technology works via an app which can be downloaded onto any smartphone or tablet, and then when the user scans at a location which is featured on the map, a beacon will send videos and other interactive content to the user’s device.

Marcus believes that integrating the augmented reality trail with a physically durable map is a winning formula:

“The interactive map is a brilliant idea; nobody has done an augmented reality trail like this.

“The SplashMaps themselves are really good, and they have a lot of practical value, you can lay them on coffee tables, car bonnets, anywhere.

“The interactive features give you plenty of historical context when you’re out and about.”

David Overton, Managing Director of SplashMaps, said:

“The project has provided the ideal opportunity for us to consider how you attach data and information to a physical map, and it’s helped us with our product development.

“Working on the project has been a lot of fun. We took the map to Bear Grylls’ survival race to test it out and ended up teaching them all about Agincourt, which was great.

“It gave us a great opportunity to interact with different people in an exciting way.”
